This walkway runs from the house down the slope to the dock, which means it spends its life damp, shaded in stretches, and walked on every time anyone heads to the water. It was sanded when it was built and never re-sanded or sealed after that. Mold and algae had darkened the pavers to the point that the original color was hard to find, and the joints told the real story: the original sand was long gone, replaced by packed dirt and moss growing in its place. How We Did It
Deep Clean and Flush the Joints
The cleaning pass does two jobs at once. It pulls the mold and algae off the surface and brings the pavers back to their own color, and it flushes the packed dirt and moss out of the joints at the same time. That second part is the one that gets skipped, and skipping it is why new sand fails: sand laid over packed dirt and live moss has nothing to lock into, and whatever is growing down there keeps growing.
Install New Joint Sand
We installed new joint sand in fieldstone color, worked down into the full depth of every joint so the pavers lock against each other again instead of sitting on dirt.
Let It Dry Overnight
We left the walkway overnight rather than sealing the same day. Sand that is still damp down in the joint does not harden properly when sealer goes over it, so the wait is not about convenience — it is the difference between joints that set up and joints that do not.
Seal With One Coat
The next day we applied one coat of Trident Cyclone, a water-based acrylic joint-stabilizing sealer. It goes on milky and dries clear, hardening the joint sand and protecting the surface while leaving a natural matte finish.
